Ntomo, the Bravo
Tribesman. Wanderer. Dafran.
Previously sociable and quick to laugh, Ntomo has since become single-minded in discovering the cause and means to combat the widespread destruction of Mwangi souls. Every encounter is approached from that motive, and he has redoubled his own daily training.
While polite, there is a growing hardness to his interactions with those neither Mwangi nor crewmate. His time, when not spent among the senior officers of the Slaver’s Reward, is spent in solitude or with the Nguma Oku.
Due to his spiritual beliefs, Ntomo is incredibly stoic concerning the fate of himself and others. Only the knowledge that souls can be destroyed has driven him to display any visible signs of grief or rage.
Ntomo was born to a small tribe in the southern lands of the Mwangi Expanse known as the Winye. The Winye hold to a very old belief system, found in various forms amongst the entire Mwangi people, which separates a person’s physical ban (vessel, cup) from their spiritual maha (soul). A person is the combination of both elements, though only the maha is eternal, passing through the Mahafra (soul crossing) on to Pauxye (paradise) after it is released from the ban. Most maha absorb the lessons of truth necessary to live in harmony within Pauxye, but sometimes a soul is sent back. Their purpose is to discover a truth which was missed in their first journey, one great enough to prevent a harmonious afterlife. These dafran (twice crossed) are known within the Mwangi people by the comparatively dead palor of their skin, and is used to explain the cause of albinism within many tribes.
Rather than ostracized, these dafran are given extra care and tutelage by the tribe and then sent out into the world, to discover what must be known. In this way, Ntomo found himself practicing his martial skill as a bravo along the piers of Port Peril before eventually being press-ganged into service aboard the Wormwood.
